Ayurveda – A brief introduction

One of the oldest holistic healing systems in the world, Ayurveda believes that the balance of mind, body, and spirit contributes to the overall health and wellness. It was originated around 5,000 years ago in India during the Vedic period and is still touted as one of the best methods of holistic living across the world. Ayurveda means knowledge of life in Sanskrit; hence, it is intended to promote good health and wellbeing and not treat or fight diseases. It teaches that the best way to live is by observing cycles in nature and utilizing practices that align ourselves with them. Hence, the Ayurvedic theory bases itself on five elements that contribute to the existence of the entire universe – space, air, fire, water, and earth. Ayurveda segments these elements into three energies or basic principles called Doshas, which are believed to be present in every being in the universe. The three Doshas - Kapha, Vata, and Pitta – decide the factors that contribute to the making of a human being.

Benefits of the Ayurvedic way of life

Ayurveda is considered a lifestyle more than a medicinal practice. Leading an Ayurvedic lifestyle is a guarantee for long and healthy life. Ayurvedic products are made using the best of nature, and hence, they are safe and free of side effects. You don't necessarily require a doctor's permission to consume Ayurvedic medicines unless you are suffering from chronic illnesses or allergies. Also, Ayurvedic home remedies are the best to deal with common colds and coughs.
